How to upgrade TaxCut from "Basic" to "Deluxe" after declining the first chance to do it

I did most of my taxes this year, and reached a point where I decided it would be worth the upgrade from H&R Block TaxCut 2015 Basic to Deluxe. Early in the process of working through my taxes, I ran into a screen offering the upgrade, but I skipped it because I thought Basic would be fine. But when I went back to look for the upgrade screen, I wasn't able to find it again. After some searching in the program, I tried an assortment of web-search terms to find instructions on the H&R Block web site and elsewhere. I didn't find the answer anywhere, and phoned H&R Block customer service.

Even the customer service agent didn't find the answer right away, but he did eventually, and walked me through it. It's probably too late for most people this year, but if the software developers don't fix the problem in future editions, maybe this description will turn up in web searches for others in future years.

Here's a summary of the procedure:

1. Save your work-in-progress tax data.

2. Create a new (temporary) return with menu File → New, then click on "Start A Return" (figure).

3. Click the "Federal" tab (figure, purple arrow).

4. Click the "Income" sub-tab (dark purple arrow).

5. Click the "Income Home       Go To" link (blue arrow).
Note: This screen shot doesn't exactly match what you'll see, because I took the screen shot after I upgraded to Deluxe. It will probably say "Basic" in the box where it shows "Deluxe" in this screen shot.

6. Click the "Next" button (figure, purple arrow).
Note: This screen shot doesn't exactly match what you'll see, because I took the screen shot after I upgraded to Deluxe. It will probably say "Basic" in the box where it shows "Deluxe" in this screen shot.

7. Click the "Upgrade to Deluxe" button (figure, purple arrow).
Note: This isn't an exact screen shot. The "Upgrade to Deluxe" box on my copy of the software disappeared after I did the upgrade, so I only had the "Upgrade to Premium" box. The "Upgrade to Deluxe" box here is simulated. Also, it will probably say "Basic" in the box where it shows "Deluxe" in this screen shot.

8. The upgrade request will lead to a window requesting payment information.

9. When payment is confirmed, a browser window will open to download the upgrade software. (The software may offer to save the empty "Untitled" tax information file. It's empty, so it's safe to answer "No.")

10. When the download completes, run the upgrade program. It will probably ask to close the Basic version to complete the upgrade, if you haven't closed it already.

11. When the upgrade program completes, start the software again – this time with the new Deluxe version.

12. The program will probably offer to do an update (not upgrade) from the version that downloaded to a version with all of the latest versions of the tax forms. If you have opened up your real tax information file (as opposed to the empty "Untitled" file), it will probably offer to safe it. If so, it's probably best to answer "Yes."

13. If the update happens and doesn't automatically start the program again, start it manually.

14. When the program starts again, it should go to the "Welcome" page. Select "Open Return" for the tax data file you created with the Basic version (figure, purple arrow).

15. The program should continue exactly where you left off, except that the program will show the word "Deluxe" right below the "H&R BLOCK" logo and "My 2015 Taxes" box.

Disclaimer: If anything fails to work as I've described, please don't blame me. (But go ahead and let me know in comments, in case it's possible for me to correct this description.) I don't work for H&R Block. I'm only trying to share the solution to a problem I ran into, in case it can help anyone else.
