cooking - Rounding up the Usual Suspects
Steve's Livejournal
Today I tried out another experimental recipe: vegetarian phad see ew. That's something we order frequently at Thai restaurants, but we've never tried to make it ourselves.

The preparations took a long time, particularly washing and chopping the bok choy. The cooking itself didn't take all that long, except for cooking the onion longer than the recipe said because I prefer my onions cooked to the point that they start to brown.

Another complication was that the recipe recommended a large skillet, but even our largest wasn't big enough; I ended up dumping the food into our wok for the final cooking, even there it barely fit.

The main thing I need to do differently next time I try it is to figure out a way to do the preparation faster; there must be some shortcuts. The only thing I did wrong was that I didn't do enjoy to separate the rice noodles from each other. Some of them stuck to each other, and those didn't cook all the way through.

It was pretty good, but I'm not sure it was good enough for the time spent. We have plenty of leftovers though.
