March 2nd, 2018 - Rounding up the Usual Suspects
Steve's Livejournal

There are a lot of Oscar ballots around, but I have my own way of doing it: with columns to check for personal favorites, picks for guesses about what the Academy will choose, and a blank space to fill in the actual winners. I've been doing it this way for several years, with various revisions along the way. This one is all blank; you can print it and use it if you like.

Soon I'll share my own selections, so I'm on record before the winners are announced, but I've seen hardly any of the films (only multiply-nominated The Shape of Water and original script nominee The Big Sick) this year so I'll have quite a few " — " ("I haven't seen it") marks on my own ballot unless I can find the song nominees and make it to the animated and live-action short film packages tomorrow.

The categories and 2018 nominees are listed in the order used on the Oscars broadcast nominee list (a link that will probably not work for long after the broadcast). They change the order occasionally (including this year), and they mess with it just enough to make copying the nominees into this ballot a manual process every year. Formal titles for categories (with a few exceptions) are from the IMDB Oscars page (a link that's less likely to break).

Update: I've added a version of this page that includes the nominees in the order the awards were presented on Sunday night's show: blank ballot in presentation order.

I posted my Oscar picks-and-predictions ballot earlier today, and I figured I'd share it, in case anyone else wants to do one the same way.

It's just a whole lot of HTML and CSS, complete with the introductory text I used, ready to be copied and pasted. I left the "my picks" column marked "haven't seen it" and the predictions column all checked. For best results (on Livejournal), it requires the "disable auto format" box to be checked.

Please yet me know if I have any mistakes here!

This is my edited version of this blank Oscars ballot with my picks and predictions filled in. Obviously, I haven't seen a lot of the nominated films this year, so there are a lot of films with " — " ("I haven't seen it") marks on my own ballot. The only films I managed to see were the multiply-nominated The Shape of Water and the original script nominee The Big Sick. I doubt I'll be able to make it to either the second half of the AMC Oscars marathon or the animated and live-action short film packages tomorrow. Maybe I'll at least be able to listen to the song nominees.

Update (after the broadcast): I adjusted a couple of my votes after I posted this before, and in both cases I switched from the right guess to a wrong one. I had guessed that Dunkirk would win for film editing, because war movies tend to do well in that category, but I changed my guess because one of our party guests said its editing didn't impress her. And based solely on "Remember Me" being a song from a Pixar movie, I guessed that it would win, but changed my prediction to "Mystery of Love" after hearing them performed on the show.

Today I went shopping for Oscars party stuff, at lots of different stores. It took a long time, but we're pretty well stocked for a party now.

One of the stops was at the cable television store, where I picked up a converter. This evening I hooked up the converter. It was a tedious process.
Note to self! The special step that it took me a long time to figure out is that I have to turn off the the Samsung "Anynet+" feature from the Settings menu to make the cable converter functional. To make the Bluray player functional, I have to turn "Anynet+" back on. Tricky!

To make the house look just a little nicer as guests enter the house, I painted the ugly space on the side of the stairs, where the outer skirtboards used to be. The old skirtboards hid the sides of the stairway stringers, which were heavy wood with an uneven over-spray of the first paint that had been on the walls of the house. (I keep forgetting the word "skirtboard" for some reason; I've had to look it up a silly number of times to be sure to use the correct term.)

Finally, I spent a silly amount of time preparing ballots for our party guests. I have a spreadsheet that generates the HTML for the on-line version of the ballot, but I still have to fill the nominees in to the spreadsheet. Additionally, that on-line version doesn't fit on a single ledger-sized page without looking ugly, so I copy it over to Word, then beat it into shape until it looks decent, such as keeping categories together rather than letting them break across column boundaries, and from the front to the back of the page. I wish I could figure out a good way to automate that step.
