May 8th, 2019 - Rounding up the Usual Suspects — LiveJournal
Steve's Livejournal

We started the day with two SIFF press screenings. Most days there are three, but today's 2 pm press screening is actual press-only; no pass-holder guests.

The 10 am film was Sink or Swim (Le Grand Bain), a French comedy about a middle-aged man who joins a men's synchronized swimming team on a whim, along with other middle-aged men. SIFF has a strong record with French comedies, and this one is good.

Because the morning film is on the long side, the second film started at 12:15 pm, instead of noon, as is typical. It was Yomeddine, an Egyptian film about a leper (cured of the disease, but badly disfigured by it) who sets out from his leper colony with a young boy, to meet the family he hadn't seen since he was a boy. I hadn't really expected to like it, but I was pleased. Good.

Update: I later learned that the press-only afternoon screening was the SIFF opener, Sword of Trust.

After the films, "J" and I went to our favorite diner for brunch. It was delicious, as usual. Later, I took "T" to his swimming class, which he enjoyed as much as usual. In the evening, our friend "K" came for a visit, and J was able to treat her to a tasty dinner of chicken curry over rice.
