May 9th, 2019 - Rounding up the Usual Suspects — LiveJournal
Steve's Livejournal

Today we went to three more SIFF press screenings. It was a good day.

The morning film was The Art of Self Defense, a satire about toxic masculinity, set mainly in the worst martial arts dojo ever. It's excellent. The comedy is hilarious, the social statement is topical and well done, and the drama is on target.

The noon film was Anthropocene: The Human Epoch, a film about how humans are causing the fifth or sixth great extinction event in the history of life on Earth. It's an important topic, but the film explores it pretty superficially. But the photography is excellent, which elevates the film to a rating of good.

The afternoon film was The Nightingale, from Australia. I think it's the first press screening I've ever attended where someone has warned the audience that it might be difficult to watch for some of the audience (for the first 15 minutes). The warning was justified; the beginning of the film was full of violence against women, children, and Australian. There are some films where the film-makers have to watch the line between doing terrible things to the characters and also traumatizing the audience, and this one crossed the line. That said, it's an excellent film, other than its failure to stay on the safe side of that line.

When we got home, I finally planted tomato starts I bought a while ago. The big part wasn't the planting, it was getting the potting soil, which was from a heap of bags of it forgotten in the cellar. They look healthier already. I have read that planting tomatoes with marigolds benefits both, but the marigolds I bought for them didn't look as healthy. Maybe I'll buy more of them.

For dinner, "J" made some pasta pesto salad. It had been planned as camp food, but we didn't want to waste.

Additionally, J did a lot of work to prepare for a bingo type of game.
